Alcantara Care: When Clean Shouldn't Mean Scrubbed
Alcantara is one of those materials that looks wonderful when it's right.
Soft, matte and tactile, it is particularly at home in performance-car interiors.
It is also very good at showing the effects of being touched.
Steering wheels, seat bolsters and other high-contact areas can gradually become darker, smoother or flattened as oils, dust and everyday contamination build up.
That doesn't necessarily mean the material is worn out.
Sometimes, what looks like wear is simply Alcantara asking to be properly cleaned.
Why does Alcantara become shiny?
Alcantara gets much of its characteristic appearance from its fine surface texture.
In areas that are handled frequently, contamination and repeated contact can compress that texture. The surface begins to look smoother and darker, particularly on steering wheels and other areas touched by bare hands.
The temptation is to attack it more aggressively.
That can be exactly the wrong approach.
Alcantara isn't ordinary upholstery
Although it can look and feel similar to suede, Alcantara is a specialist synthetic material and deserves to be treated as such.
The objective isn't simply to remove visible dirt.
It is to clean the material while preserving — and where appropriate helping to restore — the texture that gives Alcantara its distinctive appearance and feel.
That requires appropriate care rather than maximum force.
High-contact areas need attention
Performance-car interiors often use Alcantara precisely where the driver interacts most closely with the car.
That makes contamination inevitable.
A steering wheel is supposed to be held. A seat is supposed to be sat in.
Good interior care shouldn't make an owner frightened to touch either of them.
Periodic appropriate cleaning helps prevent everyday contamination from becoming progressively more difficult to address, while maintaining the material's characteristic matte appearance and texture.
Preserve the material, not just the appearance
As with paint, leather and convertible roofs, our approach is not to pursue a cosmetic result at the expense of the material underneath it.
A surface doesn't need to look artificially new.
It should look properly cared for.
With Alcantara, that means removing what shouldn't be there while respecting what makes the material distinctive in the first place.
