Ceramic Coating: The Protection Is Only as Good as the Paint Beneath It
Ceramic coating gets most of the attention.
At SPD, it isn't where the process begins.
Before every ceramic coating we apply, the vehicle undergoes multistage machine polishing and paint correction.
The reason is simple: ceramic coating protects the finish beneath it. If that finish is hazy, covered in swirl marks or lacking clarity, coating it doesn't correct those defects.
First create a finish worth protecting. Then protect it.
Paint correction comes first
Even apparently glossy paint can reveal swirl marks, wash marks and haze under proper inspection lighting.
Before ceramic protection, we use multistage machine polishing and paint correction to restore clarity, depth and reflection, while respecting the integrity of the paint.
Only then is the coating applied.
Much of the appearance associated with a freshly ceramic-coated car therefore begins before the coating ever touches the paint.
The coating protects and enhances the corrected finish. It doesn't create it.
What does ceramic coating add?
Once the paint has been properly prepared, ceramic coating provides a durable protective layer that helps resist environmental contamination and makes routine cleaning easier.
Water releases more readily. Dirt is easier to remove. Drying becomes simpler, and maintaining the gloss and clarity achieved during correction requires less intervention.
In Dubai, where dust can settle on a freshly cleaned car remarkably quickly, that's a practical advantage.
The Porsche 911 shown here demonstrates it in real use.
After paint correction and ceramic protection, the car returned to normal driving. We subsequently returned for routine aftercare, where the coating's hydrophobic behaviour and ease of maintenance could be seen in practice.
The real value of ceramic protection isn't just how the car looks on detailing day. It's how much easier that finish is to preserve afterwards.
Ceramic coating or PPF?
Ceramic coating and paint protection film solve different problems.
PPF provides a physical barrier designed to offer greater protection against impacts such as stone chips and road debris.
Ceramic coating is primarily about surface protection: resisting environmental contamination, making maintenance easier and helping preserve gloss and clarity.
For some vehicles, PPF is the priority. For others, ceramic coating provides exactly the protection they need. The two can also complement each other.
The question isn't which is universally better.
It's what you're trying to protect the car from.
Does ceramic coating prevent scratches?
No. A coated car can still develop scratches and swirl marks, which is why appropriate washing and aftercare remain important.
Ceramic protection makes maintenance easier; it doesn't make paint indestructible.
By helping contamination release more readily, however, it can reduce the amount of intervention needed to keep the car clean — helping preserve the corrected finish underneath.
Correct. Protect. Maintain.
For us, the bottle of ceramic coating isn't the most important part of the service.
The condition of the paint when that coating goes on is.
That is why every SPD ceramic coating begins with multistage machine polishing and paint correction.
We refine the finish first.
We protect it second.
Then we maintain it.
Correct. Protect. Maintain. Then drive the car.
