What Goes Into a 24-Man-Hour Detail?

But what does 24 man-hours of detailing actually mean?

It doesn't mean spending an extraordinary amount of time simply washing a car.

It means looking at the vehicle as hundreds of individual surfaces, materials and details — and giving each of them the appropriate attention.

A wash and a detail serve different purposes

A good maintenance wash keeps a well-cared-for vehicle clean.

A full detail has a different objective.

It looks beyond everyday surface contamination to the condition of the vehicle itself: the paint, interior materials, wheels, trim, grilles, badges, glass, door shuts, engine bay and the numerous smaller areas that collectively determine how well cared for a car actually feels.

On a large, complex vehicle such as a Bentley Bentayga, there is a lot of ground to cover.

The interior is more than seats and carpets

A full interior detail isn't simply a vacuum followed by wiping down the dashboard.

Modern luxury interiors combine leather, carpets, plastics, metals, screens, switches and decorative finishes, often within the same small area.

Each needs to be approached appropriately.

Then there are the less obvious areas: seams, edges, controls, vents, storage spaces, door areas and the places where evidence of everyday use gradually accumulates.

Individually, many of these details seem insignificant.

Collectively, they are what make an interior feel properly reset.

The exterior starts before polishing

Before machine polishing begins, the exterior needs to be thoroughly prepared so that the condition of the paint can be properly assessed.

Only then does the correction work begin.

Multistage machine polishing allows us to address swirl marks, haze and other appropriate paint defects, restoring clarity and depth to the finish.

This is not about chasing every imperfection at any cost.

As with all correction work, the aim is to achieve the best appropriate improvement while respecting the integrity of the paint.

Then there are the details

A vehicle isn't made entirely of large, convenient flat panels.

There are wheels, grilles, badges, handles, trim, intricate bodywork, glass, shuts and an engine bay.

These areas are easy to overlook individually, but they matter because the eye notices inconsistency.

Beautifully refined paint beside neglected trim doesn't feel finished.

A pristine interior with overlooked edges doesn't feel finished.

Detailing earns its name in the areas that are easiest to ignore.

Protection comes after correction

Once the exterior finish has been refined, ceramic protection is applied.

At SPD, ceramic coating is not used as a substitute for paint preparation. Our ceramic treatments include multistage machine polishing and correction beforehand because the quality of the finish beneath the coating matters.

First we create the finish.

Then we protect it.

Ceramic protection helps make that corrected surface easier to maintain while preserving its gloss and clarity over time.

What does 24 man-hours really represent?

Not 24 hours of waiting.

Twenty-four hours of human attention.

Time spent moving methodically around the vehicle, addressing different surfaces and materials rather than treating the car as one object that simply needs to be made clean.

Some individual tasks take minutes. Others take considerably longer.

The result comes from all of them.

And that is perhaps the simplest distinction between cleaning a car and detailing one.

A wash makes a car clean. A full detail goes further — restoring, refining and protecting the vehicle from the inside out.
